LYMES DISEASE
This year my partner and I walked sections of the Appalachian Trail and along our journey we met many hikers who encountered Lymes Disease or Borreliosis. Lymes dieases is an infectious tick born disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks belonging to a variety of species.
Early Symptoms:
· Fever
· Headache
· Fatigue
· Depression
· The famous circular ‘bullseye’ skin rash called erythema migrans
Left Untreated:
· Joint pains
· Heart problems
· Problems with central nervous system · Arthritis
· Autoimmunity: where your immune system turns on you and does not function properly by responding against your own cells and tissue
Solution: If treated early, the infection and symptoms will go away with antibiotics. Delayed, or inadequate treatment can lead to serious symptoms, which can be difficult to treat and permanently disabling.
Blacklegged ticks transmit Lyme disease
Blacklegged (or deer) ticks can transmit several tick-borne diseases including Lymes disease.
Ticks that do not transmit Lymes disease:
Lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) have been linked to transmission of several tick-borne diseases but not lymes disease. Their saliva is also irritating and can cause an allergic reaction at the site of the bite
American dog tick: also know as the Rocky Mountain wood tick can transmit many diseases but not lymes disease.
